Karel Krattner painted a fresco on a motif of the Resurrection in the dome of the memorial that is used as an exhibition hall.

It is said that during the official unveiling of the memorial several people laughed at the sculptor Alolf Mayerl and mocked him for the unnatural position of the lion at top of the memorial, apparently they even said that the statue did not look like a lion, but a like a cow. Mayerl was apparently so devasted by the mockery that he shot himself in the nearby village of Přestanov at the mass grave of soldiers.
